Millsboro Police Department Receives National Accreditation
Date: August 2009

The Millsboro Police Department is pleased to announce it has met the requirements of a highly regarded and broadly recognized body of law enforcement standards, and was accredited for the first time by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) on August 1st, 2009.

In April 2008 a team of CALEA assessors examined all aspects of the Millsboro Police Department’s policies, procedures, management, operations and support service. The assessors reviewed written materials and conducted interviews with officers and members of the community to verify the department’s compliance with written directives. The assessors then forwarded a detailed report to the CALEA Commission for review. The report detailed the Millsboro Police Department’s compliance with all applicable standards. During the assessment there are 463 standards reviewed and the Millsboro Police Department takes great pride in saying that none of the 463 standards are in non-compliance. In the report, the lead assessor stated, “The assessment team was greatly impressed by the dedication and professionalism of the Millsboro Police Department and by the state-of-the-art technology being utilized by such a small agency. Chief Murphy, the command staff and officers at all levels showed commitment to the CALEA process, exhibited enthusiasm toward their job duties and demonstrated a high regard for the department and the citizens they serve”.

The professionalism of the Department and its status as an accredited agency will assist the Department in meeting the needs of the citizens and visitors of the Town of Millsboro. Accreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.

On Saturday, August 1st, members of the Millsboro Police Department were presented this prestigious award while attending the conference in Hampton, Virginia. This was the department’s first award, and the Millsboro Police Department is the second “A” size agency in the State of Delaware to receive CALEA Law Enforcement Accreditation.
